WAGNER Releases a Free Guide to Aspirating Smoke Detection
WAGNER UK has produced a handy guide to Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD), which is available free of charge, directly from the company. An invaluable guide for consultants, fire system designers and installers, the 20-page A5 booklet covers areas such as an introduction to ASD technology, European standards, designing and installing ASD systems, applications and an overview of ASD products.

WAGNER UK has been at the forefront of ASD development for a number of years and has produced this guide in response to the significant changes heralded by a new European Standard. EN54 Part 20 is the European product standard for Aspirating Smoke Detectors, which has changed the way aspirating systems have to be designed and installed. From July 2009 all ASD systems installed in Europe have to fully comply with this standard. The standard encompasses both the project design and the ASD systems installed. Since ASD systems, like other detectors for fire detection systems, fall under the Construction Products Directive, compliance with EN54 Part 20 is a prerequisite for CE marking.

ASD systems draw air samples continuously from the monitored area through a series of pipes fitted with sampling holes at regular intervals. The airflow is then analysed for smoke particles and an alarm is raised if smoke is present. The system is active, continually drawing air samples from the risk areas. This enables ASD systems to detect fires at a very early stage, often before visible smouldering takes place, before an open fire occurs and before intense smoke develops. This early detection is vital to mission critical and high-risk applications. The earliest possible fire detection brings significant time benefits, enabling a fast response to the first signs of smoke. ASD systems can detect fires significantly faster than point or beam smoke detectors.

Aspirating systems can also provide significant benefits for buildings with large open spaces, in areas where future access is likely to be a problem (in voids, shafts, locked rooms, etc) or where the environment is too harsh for traditional smoke detectors.

WAGNER Launches CPD Seminar to Demystify New European Standard for ASD
WAGNER UK has launched a series of CPD Seminars to help fire system designers, installers and consultants better understand the implications of a new European Standard that has changed the way Aspirating Smoke Detection Systems have to be designed and installed.

EN54 Part 20 is the new European product standard for Aspirating Smoke Detectors (ASD). From July 2009 the vast majority of ASD systems installed in Europe will have to fully comply with this standard. The standard encompasses both the project design and the ASD systems installed. Since ASD systems, like other detectors for fire detection systems, fall under the Construction Products Directive, compliance with EN 54 Part 20 is a prerequisite for CE marking.

The standard introduces three classes for detector sensitivity, Class A (high sensitivity), B (enhanced sensitivity) and C (normal sensitivity), allowing designers and installers to select the most suitable solution for their application. Class C, normal sensitivity, is equivalent to traditional point detection. Class A and B provide much earlier smoke detection for more critical and demanding applications.

The hour-long CPD Seminars clearly explain the implications of the new standard and what is required to design and install a compliant system. WAGNER UK can also deliver seminars at client’s premises, to suit their own timeframe, for example a presentation with lunch, or at WAGNER’s own offices where their comprehensive demonstration facilities can be utilised. For information on the CPD seminars please call WAGNER UK on 0870 333 6116 or email sales|at|wagner-uk.com.

WAGNER UK’s TITANUS® family of ASD systems are fully compliant with EN54 Part 20 and can be installed with up to 64 sampling points and 560m of pipe for all three classes of sensitivity. It is vitally important that sensitivity thresholds do not change due to long-term drift and changing environmental conditions, as installations could become non-compliant over time. TITANUS® systems use advanced self-learning algorithms to ensure sensitivity thresholds remain within specification.

All of the ASD units in the TITANUS® range incorporate PIPE·GUARD and LOGIC·SENS. PIPE-GUARD is a unique monitoring system that detects if a sampling hole is blocked, a pipe is ruptured or if the air sampling unit has failed. This feature is vital in inaccessible areas where access is restricted and identification of individually blocked sampling points is essential. LOGIC·SENS is an advanced signal processing technology that analyses the smoke sample and provides the earliest possible smoke detection whilst safely eliminating false alarms such as cigarette smoke and diesel fumes.

The TITANUS® range has been developed by WAGNER as a simple and low cost air sampling system replacement for point smoke detectors. As well as applications where aesthetics are important, TITANUS® ASD can provide significant benefits for buildings with large open spaces, in areas where future access is likely to be a problem (in voids, shafts, locked rooms, etc) or where the environment is too harsh for traditional smoke detectors.

WAGNER Smoke Detection is Centre Stage at New Theatre Complex
Ireland’s newest theatre complex, the Wexford Opera House, has deployed Air Sampling Smoke Detection technology from WAGNER UK to provide fire protection for its main theatre and other difficult to protect areas such as the flytower above the stage.

Situated in the narrow streets of Wexford Town in the South East of Ireland on the former site of the Theatre Royal, the Wexford Opera House is a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose performing arts centre. Over four times larger than the previous Theatre Royal, the Wexford Opera House comprises a main auditorium, the O’Reilly Theatre, which can seat 780 people. A second, highly flexible space, the Jerome Hynes Theatre, has a retractable seating capacity of 175.

The Wexford Opera House, as with all theatres, creates a challenging fire protection environment, with often conflicting requirements during performances and normal operation of the centre. This is why Dublin-based DML Fire Systems Ltd chose the flexibility of WAGNER UK’s TITANUS PRO·SENS® ASD systems to provide early warning smoke detection for the most demanding areas of the complex - the large open spaces of the main auditorium and flytower. To meet the stringent ambient noise requirements, the PRO·SENS® units are fitted with high-performance fans and additional sound-proofing to produce a totally silent running system.

The PRO·SENS® systems draw air samples continuously from the monitored area through a pipe system fitted with sampling holes at regular intervals. The airflow is then analysed for smoke particles and an alarm is raised if smoke is present. The system is active, continually drawing air samples from the risk areas. Different sensitivity levels can be configured in each unit, depending on the monitored environment. Each PRO·SENS® unit is interfaced to the main fire alarm system, which was also commissioned by DML Fire Systems Ltd.

Commenting on the project, Declan Murphy, Managing Director, DML Fire Systems Ltd said, “WAGNER’s expansive range of air sampling smoke detection units provides us with the flexibility we require for any project, not least for demanding buildings such as the Opera House. The design and technical support they provide has always been first class, ensuring the smooth design and commissioning of complex systems.”

PRO·SENS®, like the other ASD units in the TITANUS® range, incorporate PIPE·GUARD and LOGIC·SENS. PIPE-GUARD is a unique monitoring system that detects if a sampling hole is blocked, a pipe is ruptured or if the air sampling unit has failed. This feature is vital in inaccessible areas where access is restricted and identification of individually blocked sampling points is essential. LOGIC·SENS is an advanced signal processing technology that analyses the smoke sample and provides the earliest possible smoke detection whilst safely eliminating false alarms such as theatrical special effects smoke.

WAGNER is nominated for the GIT Security Award 2010 with the air sampling smoke system

With the development of the innovative TITANUS® SL air sampling smoke system, WAGNER has succeeded in significantly reducing the noise produced by air sampling systems. The combination of innovative fan technology with flow and vibration-reducing measures has reduced the noise intensity level to 23 dB (A), so that even the strict WHO "Guidelines for Community Noise" limits for healthy sleep (30 dB (A)) can easily be achieved. The silent very early fire detection system also provides noise-sensitive areas for the first time with a decisive time advantage for rescue teams, and is suitable for installation in locations such as hospitals, retirement homes, hotels and offices. WAGNER to be present at International FIREX in Birmingham
WAGNER Group GmbH will have its own stand this year at the leading Fire Protection and Fire Protection exhibition in Birmingham. The German company will be presenting its innovative fire protection solutions and inviting visitors to a live demonstration in the WAGNER truck.

With its comprehensive product range, WAGNER Group GmbH is a provider of choice for integrated fire protection solutions in the areas of fire detection, fire fighting, fire prevention and risk management in general. WAGNER will use presentations on its stand to provide information about its latest fire protection solutions, with emphasis on the innovative OxyReduct® fire prevention system and the TITANUS® air sampling smoke detection family of products.

One special feature of the TITANUS® ultra-sensitive air sampling smoke detection system is the considerable time gained to enable proper measures to be taken. TITANUS MICRO·SENS®  ROOM·IDENT provides companies with a fire detection system which automatically specifies the fire location in up to five neighbouring compartments with just one air sampling system. So in the event of a fire, the exact location is given, with precise information about the room in which the fire smoke is detected. WAGNER is also concerned with very early detection over the entire spectrum of possible fires. This is where the ultra-sensitive TITANUS RACK·SENS® and TITANUS® SILENT air sampling smoke detection systems come into their own.
TITANUS RACK·SENS® was designed for use in server and switch cabinets, whereas TITANUS® SILENT  is WAGNER’s solution for all types of equipment, but especially for noise-sensitive areas in compliance with applicable noise control regulations.

Visitors to International FIREX will be offered a special highlight – the WAGNER truck. A live demonstration of the innovative OxyReduct® fire prevention system will show how fire can actually be prevented. For this purpose the oxygen concentration in a special cabin will be reduced by adding nitrogen. This will make it impossible to light a cigarette lighter, for example. OxyReduct® has now been tried and tested worldwide, with hundreds of installations.

You can find us in Hall 3, Stand D5.

Total Fire Protection for 19” Cabinets
WAGNER UK has launched TITANUS RACK•SENS®, a range of modular fire protection systems for 19” rack cabinets.
Based on their popular TITANUS MICRO•SENS® addressable Air Sampling Detection (ASD) system TITANUS RACK•SENS® provides very early smoke detection within the localised environment of a single cabinet. In the event of a fire the system within the cabinet can be quickly shutdown, minimising damage and isolating the problem without affecting other cabinets and systems in the room. Using an external sampling pipe, a single TITANUS RACK•SENS® unit can protect up to 5 cabinets and identify and shutdown which cabinet has caused the alarm.

A second version of TITANUS RACK•SENS® incorporates both ASD and extinguishing in a single unit. This can use either a FM 200 or Novec 1230 extinguishant cylinder self-contained in the unit or it can trigger an external exinguishing agent. For optimum reliability, TITANUS RACK•SENS® can be fitted with a second detector so that a ’double-knock’ must occur before the rack is shutdown or extinguishant released.

Plug & Play technology ensures that the units are easy to install and commission. Consequently many OEM’s are now offering TITANUS RACK•SENS® as a standard fit option for their 19” cabinet systems. However, they can just as easily be retro-fitted to existing cabinets. As TITANUS RACK•SENS® can instantly shutdown at a localised level in the event of a fire, other parts of the operation remain unaffected. This makes it an ideal fire protection solution for server rooms or telecommunication racks where any downtime needs to be kept to an absolute minimum.

TITANUS RACK•SENS®, like the other ASD units in the TITANUS® range, incorporate PIPE•GUARD and LOGIC•SENS. PIPE-GUARD is a unique monitoring system that detects if a sampling hole is blocked, a pipe is ruptured or if the air sampling unit has failed. LOGIC•SENS is an advanced signal processing technology that analyses the smoke sample and provides the earliest possible smoke detection whilst safely eliminating false alarms.
OxyReduct® Protects New British Library Book Store
WAGNER UK’s OxyReduct® system has been chosen to protect the British Library’s new book storage facility at Boston Spa, West Yorkshire from the risk of fire.
The facility, which will be constructed alongside the Library's existing buildings at Boston Spa, will provide additional storage capacity for 7 million items from the UK national collection, which is currently expanding at a rate of 12.5km of linear shelf space per year. The British Library chose OxyReduct® as it creates a fire-free environment and thus offers the ultimate form of fire protection for its valuable book collection.

With such a valuable archive it is imperative that a fire cannot start and no matter how good a fire detection, extinguishing or suppression system is, a fire has to start for the system to work - causing inevitable damage. OxyReduct® creates an environment where fires cannot start, by continuously reducing the oxygen level in a closed area by adding nitrogen to the air. The oxygen is reduced to a level in which most combustibles do not inflame and an open fire is impossible. Importantly, people can enter and work in the area of risk at any time.

WAGNER UK was awarded the contract by Rotary Yorkshire Ltd and will be working alongside Logic Fire Systems to design and install the system. OxyReduct® is the ideal solution for the 85,000m3 facility as its plant footprint is relatively small compared to other fire protection technologies such as sprinklers, which would also cause damage to the archive, and the area is too large for gas suppression systems. The system can be installed very quickly and its operation will not affect the environment’s constant temperature and humidity.

WAGNER UK’s TITANUS TOP•SENS® air sampling smoke detection system has also been chosen to provide a secondary backup fire protection for the facility in the case of pyrolysis. A networked system of 18 TITANUS TOP•SENS® units will be installed and interfaced together with OxyReduct® to the existing fire alarm system. Both systems will be able to be remotely monitored via the internet.

Over 180 major organisations throughout Europe have already installed OxyReduct® systems in a wide range of applications including IT data centres, communication suites, archives, museums, cold/freezer storage and warehousing. OxyReduct® has proved itself to be cost effective compared to traditional protection systems for high-value storage and mission critical applications.
